Up for Some Bingo?
By Dave | June 11, 2008
Way back when, I talked about some of the great things of cruising, including cruise food and cruise staff. After a rather lengthy hiatus from the opinion column, I’ve decided it’s time to share my views on another major segment of the cruise vacation: the shows and activities.
I’m not really into shows, but the ones I have seen onboard have all been excellent. (I can’t really compare them to land-based shows as I’ve never seen them elsewhere for the most part.) There are a variety of shows. The most popular are probably the Vegas-style shows, with dancers and music. There are also musicals. I’ve never seen one onboard but from what I have heard, they’re very good. There are also magic shows, which I have seen. They are also good. Finally, there are the comedians. Usually they’ll have the same comedian perform several times one day. There will usually be one (or two) dinner performances, as well as an adults-only late night performance. In my opinion, the comedians are hit-or-miss. There are some good ones, and there are some not-so-good ones. And then there are those in between. For example, a comedian might be good at normal jokes, but when it comes to making them dirty at night, he can’t quite do it. Or it could be the other way around: the comedian might be great at dirty jokes, but when he has to put on a clean act for the evening performance, he can’t quite get it. I’d still recommend seeing as many shows as you want. You know why? They’re all included! So if you’ve ever wanted to see a Vegas-style show, but never had the money to pay to see one on land, see one on the ship for free!
There are also many types of activites. Off the top of my head, here’s a list of activities that I can remember from previous cruises:
- Bingo
- Karaoke
- Trivia
- The Newlywed Game
- Hairy chest competitions
- Belly flop contests
- Name that tune
- Towel/napkin folding seminars
- Wine tastings
- Galley tours
- Shore excursion talks
- Slot/blackjack tournaments
- Art auctions
- Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
- On-deck movies (only on certain ships)
- Putting or mini-golf tournaments
- Happy hours
- And much more…
That’s all I could think of off the top of my head. There’s a lot more though. And there’s also more within the list. For example, there’s an endless variety of trivia: movies, theme songs, sports, general, 1970s, historical, etc. Anyway, as you can see from that list alone, there’s a whole lot to do onboard, which is another reason why I love cruising. There’s so much to do! And for the most part, it’s all free. What’s your favorite activity? Mine’s probably trivia.
