Carnival LegendWhat’s your favorite cruise ship? Mine would have to be the Carnival Legend. Well actually, it would probably just be the entire Spirit Class of Carnival ships, but the Legend was the only Spirit-class ships I’ve been on so far (with the Miracle soon to be added to the list). So what’s so great about the Carnival Legend, you might ask?

Well first and foremost, it is the most well-designed ship the Carnival fleet. My favorite aspect of the ship is the fact that there is no dining room in the middle of the ship! On all other classes of Carnival ships, there is a dining room in the middle of the ship. For anyone who has ever travelled on any of these ships — I know the Destiny class is like this; they might have remedied this with the Conquest class — in order to get from one end of the ship to the other on the decks where the dining rooms are located, you must go up/down a couple decks to cut through where the mid-ship dining room is. I find this very awkward and annoying. Why should I have to go up to Deck 6 when I want to get from Deck 4 aft to Deck 4 bow? It just doesn’t make sense. This scenario does not apply when the dining room is not completely shut off from the public. There are times when the dining room is closed, but the fire doors aren’t shut. At these times, you can cut through the dining room. But at any other time it isn’t possible to cut through.

Another great aspect of the Legend is her size. She’s not too big, not too small. Yes, I do like the big ships, but I don’t mind the smaller ships either. I think the Legend is a great size. Despite her smaller tonnage (around 88,000 tons), she is in the longest class of ships in Carnival. You wouldn’t expect the third smallest/largest ship to be the longest, would you? The reason for this is because this class is considerably narrower than previous (and later) classes. This class of ships was designed to fit through the Panama Canal, hence they are called Panamax ships, meaning they can fit through the Panama Canal. This also gives the Spirit class its unique look (see above picture). If it were any wider, like a Conquest-class ship for example, it would be called post-Panamax, meaning it is too wide to fit through the Canal.

Anyway, back on track, there is one gripe I have about this ship. That would be those random turns in the hallways. On all other cruise ships I’ve been on, the hallways where the staterooms are located are straight. On the Spirit-class ships though, there are random turns in the hallways. If you aren’t watching where you’re going, you can walk right into a wall! I never did, luckily, but it’s still quite strange…

Yeah, I’m not really sure where I’m going with this… I guess I just wanted to talk about my favorite ship, or rather, class of ships. Expect a more thrilling article next time (hopefully).
