Disney to Consider Alaska Cruises

By Dave | September 1, 2008

I don’t really follow Disney too much, but this headline caught my eye. It seems that Disney might begin some cruises to Alaska starting in 2010. At first I thought this was strange, but then I read that they already have sailed to the Mediterranean.

This is just my opinion, but I don’t think Disney should cruise from anywhere other than Florida or California, since that’s where Disney World and Land are. I mean, as of right now they shouldn’t. They only have two ships in their fleet so there isn’t a whole lot to work with. I always thought that a lot of Disney’s cruisers went to a Disney park either before or after the cruise as part of the vacation. Obviously I’m wrong, but that was always my conception. Now, if Disney were to expand their fleet, adding a few more ships, then I could see them sailing from non-Disney areas. Until then though, it just seems silly to me for them to sail away from their land-based areas. I know that might sound crazy or stupid, but that’s just my opinion (at least for now).

This is from a Disney press release:

Feb. 22, 2007 - The Walt Disney Company today announced the long-awaited expansion of the Disney Cruise Line. In a press release, company President and CEO Bob Iger announced that the company has signed a letter of intent with Meyer Werft Shipyards of Germany to build two, 122,000-ton ships, each with room for 4,000 guests (Disney’s current ships are each 83,000-ton/2,400 guests). The first of the two, as yet unnamed ships will be delivered in 2011, and the second will arrive in 2012.

Well that’s good news! At least now they (will) have more ships to work with.

I am very fond of traveling to different places and I am really particular with the cruises that I am availing. Knowing the the long-awaited expansion of the Disney Cruise Line was great. Can you send me more information on how I can possibly avail this kind of cruises?

    Jim

Those were some interesting renderings. I’m assuming, looking at the second image, that the two new ships will really be much bigger, and it’s not just the perspective of the drawing.

    Looks good!
